The 44th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry (Confederate) was organized as early as September 7, 1861 under the command of Col. A. K. Blythe as Blythe's Regiment, Mississippi Infantry and served in the Western Theater under Cheatham's and Smith's Brigades. They were re-designated the 44th Infantry Regiment as early as November 7, 1861. It was later commanded by Cols. Jacob H. Sharp, James Barr and Lt. Col. Sims and served under Chalmer's, Sharp's, and Hood's Brigades. (HMU, 30-31; DR-MSOR, 740-746; NPS-BU)
