The 40th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry (Confederate) was organized on May 14, 1862 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi under the command of Col. Wallace Bruce Colbert and served in the Western Theater under Moore's and Hebert's Brigade in the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana. It was later commanded by Cols. George P. Wallace and James R. Childress, and Lt. L. H. Hollingsworty. The unit later served under Baldwin's and Featherston's Brigades in the Army of Tennessee and was consolidated with the 33rd Infantry Regiment to form the 3rd Regiment, Mississippi Consolidated Infantry on April 9, 1865 in Johnston County, North Carolina.
