Alabama--State Penitentiary (Wetumpka)

Operating at the state level, the Alabama State Penitentiary (also known as the Wetumpka State Penitentiary) was built in Wetumpka, Coosa County, Alabama in 1841. It was the state’s first prison and formally authorized by an act of the state legislature on January 26, 1839. In 1922 it was converted to exclusively house female prisoners until 1942 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The remaining structures were demolished by the end of the twentieth century. (Encyclopedia of Alabama; Wikipedia)
