Commonly known as the Wigfall Guards, Company H of the 25th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry (Confederate) was organized as an independent company on July 23, 1861 in Shelby County, Tennessee under the command of Capt. John J. Gage and served in the Western Theater. It was later designated as Company H of the 2nd Regiment, Confederate Infantry on January 31, 1862. It was later reorganized as Company D of the 1st Battalion, Mississippi Sharpshooters on May 8, 1862. (HMU, 25; DR-MSOR 649-657)
