The 40th Regiment, Alabama Infantry was organized on May 16, 1862 in Mobile County, Alabama under the command of Col. Augustus A. Coleman and served in the Western Theater. It was later commanded by Col. John H. Higley. It was mustered out of service on April 26, 1865. (NPS-BU; MSR-CSA)
