The 24th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry (Confederate) was organized in September and October 1861 in Lauderdale County, Mississippi under the command of Col. William F. Dowd and served in the Western Theater in General Walthall's and Brantly's Brigades in the Army of Tennessee. It was later commanded by Col. Robert P. McKelvaine. It was consolidated with the 27th, 29th, 30th, and 34th infantry regiments to form the 24th Regiment, Mississippi Consolidated Infantry on April 9, 1865. (HMU, 24; DR-MSOR, 640-648; NPS-BU)
