Governor State of Mississippi

The undersigned would respectfully ask the exercise of Your influence with the President and the War Department to have this Regiment tranfered from this point to the Sea Coast of Mississippi the present attitude of the Enemy with regard to our State together with the fact that so many of of her citizens having Volunteered and gone to distant points renders this request eminently proper in our view of what is due to our State and ourselves as Mississippians, and we further appeal to You as our Executive and direct friend as you have ever proved of the Volunteer to urge this in view of the fact that our position is not a pleasant one having in fact all the drudgery and labor to perform and subjected to the capriced of every one who happens to bear a commission in the Regular Army. and we think you will conclude with us that the Fathers & Mothers of Mississippi's sons sent them forth to strike the enemy of her country and ^not^ to spend their time in building Hen Coops & Gardens for a set of men they know not nor care for, in fact to keep us here under the condition of things as they are amounts to a punishment so severe that all who have undergone the trials incidental and peculiar to the New Mississippi Regiments will never in the future be found in the volunteer service.
