Letter from Anne Mataw to the Mississippi Legislature; December 2, 1859

To the Legislature of the state of Mississippi.

The undersigned, a free wo-man of color, preferring a residence ^as a ~~[slave?]~~slave^ in this state where she was born to a residence in a non-slaveholding ^state;^ ~~and~~ believing that slavery with a humane owner is preferable to a freedom in a free state; & in view of the certainty that the legislation of the State, if not at the present session, will soon be such as to coerce all free persons of color to leave it, most respectfully requests your honor—able body to pass a law allowing her under such forms ^as^ you may prescribe to select, in the person of Mrs. Elizabeth G. Purdom, an owner and as in duty bound your petitioners will ever pray &c
