Dear Sir, Complaint having been made to the Faculty of the University by Some parents, that their sons, students in the University, being minors, had been mustered into the mili-tary service of the state without their knowledge and against their wishes; and a feeling seeming to be apparent in some quarters, that the Faculty had not been entirely faithful to their trust, in permitting such enlistments, a circular letter was_x some ten days ago, addres=sed to the parent or guardians of every member fo the com=

-pany of University Greys who is under age, inquiring whether their son or wards have acted with or without consulting them; and, in the latter contingency asking what they desire to be done in the case.

In several instances, replies have been received, saying that the proper consent was given. In others, it is represented that the young men have acted without authority, and a desire is expressed that the Faculty shall withdraw them.

A dispatch is published here to day, saying that the company will be ordered into active service within twenty four hours. Though, therefore, responses have not

yet been received all the cir-culars, I deem it my duty to state to you, by the earliest opportunity which presents itself, that I have letters before me from M. L. F. M^cKenzie, of ~~Marshall~~ ^Tippah^ desiring the discharge of his son J. W. M^cKenzie,

From Dr. W. M. Lea, of Marshall asking the discharge of his son W. M. Lea, jr.

From J. W. Fant, of Marshall, asking the discharge of his son L. T. Fant,

From Mrs. C. S. Farpley, of Jackson, desiring that her son, J. E. Farpley may be restrained from marching with the company.

From Bp. W. M. Green, of Jackson, making the same request in behalf of his son, G. B. Green, and from

In addition to those, I know that the son of Bp. Gregg, of Texas (Alex Greg, jr) volunteers without his father's knowledge and consent; and that he (as well as I) believe that his father will not approve the act. In this case I feel some personal responsibility, ~~and~~ ^as^ the Bishop looks to me to counsel and direct his son in matters of moment.

On behalf, therefore, of the young men herein named, I respectfully solicit your action, as the commander in charge of the military press of the state, to discharge them from their oblig=ations to serve, incurred without the consent which the law con-templates, all of them being minors,
