To His Excellency J. J. Pettus

sir enclosed Please find a List of a company organized to serve for and during the war, under your call upon the state for Three thousand volunteers for the confederate states we are anxious to go into camp of instruction therefore we would Respectfully ~~state~~ request you to Muster our Baner (Mr Cooper) into the service and authorize him to Muster the com-pany into the service, if it can be done Legally, if not we would be glad that an officer duly qualified could meet us on Tuesday the 30 ^th,, inst as the company will meet on that day to drill and to hear your Orders in regard to the company, we would Like to drill some few day say 9 or 10 before we Leave, but that shall be no impediment, there are two points on which I would thank you for a written Opinion in regard to two points to wit; some of the citizens say they would volunteer but

they fear they will have to bear their own expenses to the place of drill, others contend that they will have to wait until the end of the war for their pay I have told them that they were mis-taken but still they are incredulous, if the call for three thousand is full we will be willing to serve in the two Regiments call to guard the Mississippi but we would prefer going to Virginia (or in other words to the seat of war,). Please state whether we will receive pay if we drill nine days,, I would further state that Captain Prince of the Ellisville invincibles (a 12 months company) and myself made an agree-ment that we would beat up for volunteers together and as many as wished to go from one company to the other should have the Liberty to do so but he was mustered into the service and I was not as the men joined the Company he mustered in such as came to him, ~~such~~ I could not do so so when the test came I sent all such as wished to his company and he cannot transfer without it

it is done Legally and there are some in his company that wish to come to mine and Capt Prince is willing to transfer for his company has more than a full compliment, and in order that there may be no difficulty attending it Please send him the authority, to transfer so far as he is willing to when this company is mustered into service and I would suggest that Capt Prince Lives near me and would be a very good person to muster us into the service
