Dear Sir

The Ladies Volunteer Relief Society of this place have adopted the plan of obtaining subscrip-tions in cotton to be used in the pur-chase of clothing &c for our brave men now in the army and for our brave men now in the army and for those about to join—

They have designated me to ask you if in the event of the continuation of the blockade, the cotton they may receive can not meet with a certain sale at the Penitentiary—say ten (10) bales by the 1^st Oct & ten (10) 1^st Dec The state buys cotton every year, now let her agree to take this and thus place the funds, cash or Treasury, notes in the hands of the ladies for the above laudable purpose,

If they could feel an assurance that the cotton they might get could meet with a certain sale, they would be justifiable

in going forward and making the necessary purchases and have the clothing ready at a much earlier day than they other-wise could or—Those of our men opera-ting in the mountainous districts of V^a will need winter clothing next month—another inquiry—Do you manufacture Jeans in the Penitentiary? If so can it not be dyed of a gray color there—a large lot of this would be bought for our soldiers; it would be the very best material for winter clothing—
