To his excellency, the Governor of the state of Mississippi,,

Dr sir

Being associated with about 60 Elderly men for the purpose of doing whatever we can in aid of our southern cause, and finding persons in our midst who despise our cause, crave the suckcess of the North, and express great delight at hearing of our southern soldiery meeting with missfortunes, such as sickness & death thereby, I write you for information. We who have sons, brothers & fellow countrymen exposed to the shafts of death, which fly thick and fast ^in their midst,^as they crowd the Battlefield in defence of our rights, feal, that those who live in our midst, & harber such feallings or Sentiments, should not be permited to give expression to the same without being held responsible therefor, Far instance a man says " I glory in hearing of our soldiers being sick & dying thereby, I desire that the north may subj=ect the south, the south ought to be overcame & whiped back in to the union &c"

shall we weight for action upon their part or should they be delt with for expressing such sentiments: [gap] We desire to proceed without doing any one Injury unjustly;

What should be don with such characters? Is there any authority to whom we can turn them over? [gap] How shall we proceed? An early answer will be gladly received and much oblige yours obedently
