Steamboat R J Lakland on the mississippi River above Memphis Jan the 28th 1862

To Gov J. J. Pettus Dear sir

I address you a few lines not knowing who els to address on the subject contained in this letter the 3rd miss Reg left columbus Ky on the night of the 18th of this moth at the time the Reg left I was sick in the Hospital the Surgeon Dr G M. Smith had left on furlough for me Dr. Boyle the assistant surgeon was quite sick and left on the 21st leaving me and 16 others sick and nurses in Hospital with out any in structions from anyone 4 of those men left have since Died and I being Chief or head nurse have procured transportation for the Balance as far as Vicks burg miss to gather with what Hospital Stores the Reg had at the time of its leaving Columbus I do not know where the Regiment has gone to I suppose to new ~~town~~ new ~~leans~~Orleans and it is my wish to join the Regiment as soon I can but cant Pass ~~vick~~ Vicksburg unless I can procure farther transportation for myself and 4 other men and the Hospital Baggage medicines and all the surgical instruments belonging there to if it is right and believe it is for me to follow my Reg with thes things you will pleas meet or caus to be must this Boat at vicksburg with a transportation ticket as she Runs Direct to store the Baggage with B J Butler and wait causing unnecessary, Delay and expenses yours in haste
