Governor of Mississippi.

Sir.

In view of the recent exciting events in Kentucky, and the probability of a draft of the Militia of this State, I have decided to offer an ap-plication for an appointment in the service of the State—

I was for two years a Cadet at the Virginia Militia In-stitute, where I received instruction in Infantry Tactics from Col William Gilbany, and in Artillery from Major General (then Major) T. J. Jackson of the Army. I served in the Virginia Howitzers during the John Brown foray, and commanded the March, as Sergeant on the day of the execution.

Your Excellency may remember me as the Author of a plan for the defence of this City, which was recently laid before you by Dr. Emmanuel of this City, and which, I have been told

met with your approbation—

I, therefore, respectfully ask Your Excellency to receive and con-sider this, my application for an appointment in the service of the State.

I do not desire a command of any responsibility, for I feel that the fact of my being a young man would in such a case, be a disadvantage to me I would like a Staff appointment. I am thoroughly posted in the duties of such an office, and believe I could give satisfaction in such a position—

If it is not in the power of the Governor to make such appointments, I trust that you will lay this letter before the Major General, or one of the Brigadiers, when elected.
