To His Excellency Gov. Pettus:

Sir:

Instigated by a desire to serve my country, early in last April ~~last~~ I joined the Provisional Army of the Confed-erate States; I have since infancy been af-flicted with Rheumatic pains, and after a thorough trial, of some four or five months, I was pronounced unfit for the duties of a soldier, and discharged by reason thereof. As the times seems to require the services of all, I drop you this for the purpose of asking to be placed in some position where I can be of benefit

I hold myself at the bidding of your Excellency and would be pleased to hear from you at your earliest convenience.

If desired, I can refer your to your brother of Carrollton, Ala., or numerous persons in this vininity
