Gallatin Miss April 21^st 1862,

His Excellency John. J. Pettus Governor &c

Sir.

In view of the cirumstancs surround=ing us and the fact that, lately, persons pro=fessing to be residents of Tennessee and other parts north of this, have been travelling through the Country under circumstances that have induced the opinion among many of our citizens ~~to believe~~ that some of these travellors are spies sent by the enemy to spy out the country &c. We submit to you and through you to such authorities that may be invoked, that some steps be taken to the end that such persons be subjected to such scru=tiny as will secure us from disguised enemies.
