Most Hon. Sir:

Knowing your time must be very valuable from the multiplicity of cares of your State and Country, I will try and occupy but little of it. So waiving all further ceremo-ny, I will state the object of this letter at once. To ascertain if I, a Northern lady, can return to my home in Boston: is there any possible way for me to go to my mother; I feel assured that morn and night she sends a prayer to the Throne of Grace for my safe restoration to her arms. I came South one year ago last Oct. to teach, with many bright hopes

and speculations for the future, but alas! for human expectations; they are like bubbles that are blown away in the air. My situation is exceedingly disagreeable and embarrassing; all my efforts to make myself useful meet with so much coldness and hauteur that I have become almost weary of myself. Please to advise me. "The quality of Mercy is not strained, it droppeth, as the gentle Dews of Heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed; it blesses him that gives, and him that takes. 'Tis mightiest in the mighitest, it becomes the throned Monarch better than his crown." From your position in society I suppose you to be an honorable whole-souled gentleman far above a prejudice that would prevent you from doing a generous act, and as such I have addressed you. Hoping you will not consider me too presumptuous in writing and expecting a reply, and will forgive this trespass upon your time,
