Ebenezer, Miss June 27^th, 1862

To His Excellency J. J. Pettus
Governor of Mississippi

Dear Sir,

I would respectfully represent to your Excellency that John Garrard, a blacksmith and a very necessary man to this neighborhood, has been drafted to serve in the Militia. There being no other mechanic of the kind for miles around it becomes a question whether the public good will not be better. served by granting him a discharge from militia duty and allowing him to ply his calling. I take the liberty of calling your attention to this special case from no earthly motive but the good of this neighborhood, the individual himself having no knowledge of this purpose. I refer you to Col. M. D. Haynes who from his knowledge of the circumstances is no doubt ^prepared^ to give you whatever in-formation you may deem necessary.
