Dear sir.

Presuming on a sleight acquain-t~~ani~~ance with you, begun at the University of Mississippi, I have taken the liberty of asking a favor of you which I hope you will be prepared to grant without serious inconvenience, and which would be greatly and deeply apprecia-ted by me.

It is merely this. Identifying myself and future with Mississippi, I would like to do her all the service of which I am Capable. I would therefore aspire to a position on your pers-onal staff, believing much could be done to ass-ist you in your arduose duties, and feeling that I could contribute all of soul and mind to that end.

If you Could favor me in this matter, [it?] would be a Kindness which would never be forgotten, and which only the future Could reciprocate. I will await anxiously your answer. Please let me hear from you as soon as Convenient, and til then I will hope favorably

P S. I met with you first in the Phi Sigma society of the University of Missⁱ. as Prest. of that body, and afterwards on a Commence^t. occasion in 1860—and at the Commence^t Ball

P. S. At the time of the Commencment at the pres-sent War I was studying Law at the University of Virginia While yet there Gen^l Mise passed on his way West Calling for immediate assistance I left with him immediately, and was with him through all his Campaign in Western Virginia up to the Battle on Roanoke Island. Since then I have been in no regular position. I am very anxious to Connect myself at once permanently and forever with the destinies, of my state and my Country. I will hope that it may be done [thru?] you.
