Hon J. J. Pettus:

Dear Sir:

Permit me as a mem-ber of the Board of Police of Kemper County to address you this letter of inquiry on the proper course for the Board to pur-sue in regard to the support of the fam-ilies of voluntiers. The "Relief" fund ^collected in this county^ is greatly inadequate for that object, it having been nearly exhausted already, nor will the amount apportioned to this County from other counties supply the deficiency. In my opinion, it will fall far short of providing for these famil [page torn] and they should not be thrown upon the cold charities of the people, if it can be avoided. The Board has no power to levy any additional tax to the one above mentioned, under existing Laws, and to assume such power would be—futile. But may it not issue warrants on the county Treasury, trusting to future legislation to legalise the act, and empower it to levy a tax for their redemp-tion. Upon your recommendation of such an act, the Legislature would probably grant the desired relief. What has been the action of other counties, and what is your advice

on the subject?

Some action is rendered the more nec-essary to provide for the coming wants of these families, in consequence of the long drought which has prevailed this summer, destroying the Sandy land Crops, and largely reducing the usual yield of corn in the best grain lands.
