To His Ex. Gov. J J. Pettus

Your petitioners M^rs S. W. Cunliffe and M^rs E. M Povall citizens of Holmes C^o Miss. would most respectfully state to your Excel-lency that their husbands J R Cun-liffe and J. P. Povall are now in the war, the former in the service of the Confederate States and the latter in the service of the State of Mississ-ippi. They further represent Tho^s S. Wright is the Brother in law of M^rs Povall and has had charge of their property consisting mostly of negroes & land, ~~since~~ and the super-intendence of their family since their husbands have been in the service. They further state that M^r Wright is a member of Capt. Adams Cavalry company which has been ^called^ into active service & which they learn he joined un-der the expectation that it would not go out of the coun-ty but would remain here for home protection. They moreover state that they know of no one who can take care of their families if

their Brother goes into active service. M^rs Povall having no male relation in the state and most of M^rs Cun-liffs being in ^the^ army. They further represent ~~that~~ M^r Wright is a minister of the Gospel in the regular dis-charge of his duties as such and not liable to military duty, ~~except as a~~ They would therefore most respectfully pray your Excellency to discharge him from service in said company—
