Hon. John J Petteus Governor of the State of Miss.

Dr Sir

The Baptist Church at Decatur at a recent conference Resolved to ask your Excellency to appoint a day of fasting humiliation and Prayer to Almighty God for his aid in our deliverance from his Judgements which are now upon us in the presence of a haughty and wicked foe who is makink inroads upon our soil—Believing God shapes the destinies of nations as well as men and that his eyes are ever ^open^ to the conditions of his creatures the church took the action alluded to of which the following is a copy "viz"

"In view of the invasion of our State by the enemy and of the calamities to which we are extosed Resolved—That this church petition Gvernor Pettus to appoint a day of fasting humiliation and Prayer to Almighty God for his aid in our deliverance from our enemies and the success of our arms in the present war
