To his Excellency J J Pettus Governor of Mississippi

Sir I deem it prudent to address you a few lines to let you know our peculiar situation in this section of our state.

I am engaged in conducting a Tannery and shoe shop. I am so situated that I cannot conduct the business without my personal attention on that all the time. The Citizens of a large portion of Country are dependent on me for Shoes and Leather. During the last two years I have furnished shoes for a large number of our Soldiers at very reduced prices. All that I desire is such a profit on my business as will enable me to support my family untill this unhappy war shall close I am exempt by the confederate conscript. In our but we have been stript of men untill ther is not more than five or six men left capable

of doing military Service. We ^know^ no good but much evil that will result from this few being called to from home once in two weeks and some to a considerable distance to attend what oncan be called a nominal Drill I am willing and anxious to serve my Country in, any way that I can and I hope your excellency will write to me and let me know what to do All I want to know is what my duty is to my country and I am willing to do it. Your Excellency's sincere friend.
