His Excellency John J Pettus

Honorable Sir

We ink you a few lines to in form you that we [Have?] Invented in our [Firm?] one of The Simplest & Safest Breech loading Rifles That has been Introduced in the Country it has been Tested by The Armory at Richmond and by the Armory of our State The Gun stood the Test firmly at both places we are Manufacturing These Guns for the Army the Guns are now in The Service of our State Troops and are Highly approved of as have [?] The principle [?] in South Carolina & Georgia & some in Alabama and every Gun Factory is desirous To manufacture This Gun for The use of our Armies The Govenor of Alabama was much

One Thousand of Them right off This Gun that we have on Exibition was a Cavellery Gun That can be made for $50⁰⁰ by The quantity The Infanty Gun will be worth more The Govenor of Georgia was much pleased with The Gun & The Adjutant General he said it was The best arrangement of a Gun he have seen—The Governor said He thought he would want some of Them we intended Visiting your city but learned the Yankees were thier we came back we should be much pleased to Have your Supplier with some of These Guns we should be much pleased to Hear from you on The Subject we have a Patent on it for 14 years we could send you a sample Gun if you desire if it can be gotten to you
