Hon Charles Clark
Governor of the State of Mississippi,

I regret much that So ~~much~~long a time has elapsed in my reply to your letters ^to me^ uppon Penten-tiary matters, Absence & sickness in my family is the best apology I can make you, I have been connected with the Mis Pententiary, I think, for some fifteen or sixteen years, & think I know something of the habits & temperment necessary to ~~give~~ produce harmo-ny, & give success to the Institution, Their are many Gentlements about Jack that posess those traits, But in suggesting Some one to fill my Place I will mention Maj F S Hunt who I think ~~will~~ well addapted to the office of Inspector, I will be at Macon on Monday ~~or Tuesday~~ next, where I should like to have a personal interview with you uppon this subject, & would be glad if you could delay action uppon the matter, if you have not all ready taken it, until that time, If however your view of the public Interests forbid any further delay, and my resignation is at all necessary in the premises, please consider this as such, ^with the weeks^ for the final restoration of your health, & the success of your Administration believe me verry sincearly Your Friend & O^bt Svt.
