Mobile March 19^th 1864

Governor,

I have been called upon by Lt. Genl Polk to furnish sufficient negro labor from the counties of Hinds, Madison, Attala, Yazoo, Holmes and Yellobusha to repair and put in order the rail road from Jackson to Grenada. The work has been placed in charge of Major George Whitfield, who has been temporarily authorized to impress the labor, in view of the immediate execution of the work—

He has been directed to appoint the Sheriff of the several counties his Impressing Agents, and will be relieved of the duty as soon as your Excellency will inform me of the names of the Sheriffs of the several counties above named, to whom I will send commisions and instructions direct.—

This will be in compliance with the writ heretofore [expresed?] by you, that the office of Impressment Agent in the several counties in which labor was to be procured, should be confered upon them.—I shall be pleased to receive any suggestions on the subject of this letter with which you will be kind enough to furnish me—
