We have been informed that you have commissioned Cha^s E Nelson & Marion Pierce as Lieut in Capt Princes Co of Cav recently raised in Lawrence County Miss

Nelson belonged to Co "B", 22 ^nd Miss Regt and obtained a pass for 15 days to go to Lawrence County, in Jany last and left his command the day that Gen Lorings Division left Canton on the retreat to Demopolis ala—he did not return to his command and is a deserter—he has a very poor reputation as a soldier we refer you to his Company Officers Capt J. B. Russel Canton Miss—Lt Huntley Comdg Co "B" 22^nd Miss Regt— for any further information Marion Pierce deserted his Command (6^th Miss) on the above mentioned retreat— refer you to Col Loring Comdg 6^th—We regret to See Such men Commissioned when there are So many worthy Soldiers who desire these positions and
