Dear Sir

Your favor of the 21^st Inst with acts of Legislature has been rec^d. & contents had particular attention

There is only ^one^ other chair in this County (Augustu)—&he with the other commissioners has entered promptly on their duties. The distribution of the appropriation for Sol-diers families—(widows & orphans included)—is doing much good both in supplying their wants & in its moral effect. State money buys every thing to be had in the Country, at price, not unreasonable, except Cotton Cards, which at current prices are beyond the reach of a number (not large) in this County.= I think 2 doz pairs distributed without charge would do much—in rescuing that number of families from idle=ness & enabling them to make their own clothing.

Is it not practicable to furnish a few pairs at the discretion of the Commisioner without charge?—One of the Com-missioners has visited several families who really are in Want of clothing and who can do nothing towards obt=aining it without cards—1 doz pairs—if no more could be had—would be be very gratefully rec^d—

I am gratified to learn that the article of salt will also be placed within the reach of the poor during the summer= a few medicines only, will be required=
