Preston, Miss., Nov. 15, 1864.

His Excellency, Charles Clark,
Governor of Mississippi

Dear Sir:—We are now establishing in this place a first class Female Boarding School or college. Our prin-[page torn]al is already here, and the building-[page torn] are being fitted up as fast as [page torn]ible, as we wish to commence [page torn]ations on the first Monday in [page torn]ary next. But we are greatly in [page torn] books, stationary, and musical [page torn]uments, and, so far as we know [page torn]ot obtain there any where in [page torn]Confederacy. We therefore, res-[page torn]fully and earnstly as your Ex-[page torn]cy to recommend that our prin-cipal, Mrs. A. A. J. Curle be permitted to carry cotton into Memphis to purchase these necessary things, as we are informed they can be obtained there.

Knowing the interest taken by your Excellency in the cause of Education in general, and especially in the educa-tion of soldiers orphans, we are em-boldened to make this request, and will state that there are some eight or ten little boys and girls, in this neighbor-hood whose fathers died in the Army.

Dear Sir: I wrote to you some week since communica-ting a plan for establishing a literary magazine, for which I asked the influence of your name in ap-proval—to which I have recieved no reply. Since then I have impro[page torn] my plan and submitted it to s[page torn] eminent men, among them [page torn] Fisher, Major Harper and A[page torn] Strong, and Mrs. J. W. Laskey, all of [page torn]

highly approve my [?] an[page torn] given it there patronage. A[page torn] the improvement is the establi[page torn] of a steam press to print scho[page torn] alone—and are now engaged[page torn]-ting up a series of English school books wholly Southern, and as soon as done there I shall turn my atten-tion to the classics. May I not look for a note of approval from you? It would cheer me in my labor and secure me many patrons.
