D^r Sir, [gap] D^r E. H. Anderson was on yesterday convicted in the Circuit Court of Attala County upon the charge of selling a few gallons of whiskey to W. J. Young of Kosciusko, long, and at present, a large & respectable drug-gist of Kosciusko, and sold and bought for me-dicinal purposes. The whiskey was made by D^r Anderson, and he is indicted in Madison County for distilling the same. The D^r is sentenced for said sale to three months imprisonment in the County Jail—the lightest punishment un-der existing laws that I could impose. Permit me to say that I have known D^r Anderson for many years, and know him to be one of the most eminent and useful physicians in our state and a gentleman of the most exem-plary habits & virtues. It is perhaps his first offense against any one of our laws, and induced by no desire of gain or speculation, but rather in kindness, to supply those wants & necessities on the country that would not other-wise be met. He is not the man to be thus pub-lished & punished. Permit me respectfully but earnestly to say that I hope you will relieve him in the premises so far as the im-prisonment is concerned.
