Canton April 1^st 1865

His Excellency Charles Clark.

Governor:

You will receive herewith a petition for pardon on behalf of Mr W H Cassell a Druggist of Canton, a highly respectable & honorable gentleman—It is signed by the Judge, Dist Atty. the jury who rendered the verdict, also the members of the bar & by standers ^by all^ who witnessed the trial, also by D^r Harrold the only witness for the state—The sale of the spirits was made a short time after the passage of the law prohibiting it, before it became generally known & before the state had established agencies for its sale for medical purposes—It was indispensibly necessary to save the life of the Doctor's patient—

I trust that you will agree with the petitioners in opinion that this is a case, which calls for exec-utive clemency—
