To the Hon. Charles Clark, Gov. of Mississippi.

We, the undersigned, citizens of Pierce Springs, Clark County, Miss. and the adjoining county, would respectfully represent, that S. S. Mellen, at this time a private in Co. H—Capt S. W. Chapman 1^st Regiment of State troops—Col. W. S. Patton—has been for the past ten years, and now is, principal of the Goodman Institute, a School located at Pierce Springs, and furthermore that this School has been, dur-ing all that time, in a very flourishing condition, the number of its pupils, drawn from various portions of Mississippi, Ala-bama and Georgia, having ranged from forty to Seventy-five per session, and further more that this ^is^ now the only school, so far as we are apprised, in this part of the State, when youth can acquire a thorough business or classical Education or be fitted for college. Such being the case, we think it would be highly det-rimental to the interests of the commu-nity for the Goodman Institute to be broken up, or its exercises interrupted—

We therefore most respectfully, but Ear-nestly petition your Honour, that S. S. Mellen may be discharged from the military service of the State and per-mitted to resume the Exercises of his school at its regular time for opening on the 1^st Monday of October Ensuing—
