Dr Sir—your general character for Benoevalence and ~~and~~ extending the hand of friendship and help to the youth of our country is sufficient guarantee for my wanting to tresspass on your time & kindness, to solicit your influence in obtaining a cadetship for my Son at West Point

If the way is now open for the young men of the South to obtain said situations would be verry thankful for your advice & aid in the premises—

The partiality of a Parent may blind but I flatter myself that my son has mind that if cultivated, and properly trained would be useful to his country & society, which I un=derstand is the main object of said National Institution—

It is hardly necessary for me to apprise you that the savages of war have swept away my Substance, and I am unable to bestow Such education upon my Son, as I desire, or as the concurent testimony of his various teachers attest his mind capable of receiving—

I am not aware of any change in the law in regard to the reception of cadets from the South. and as there has doubtless been few nominated from

this section for the last four years. I think it a favorable time to apply—

My antecedents are sufficiently well known to you without mentioning them in this connection.

My son is 15 years old, robust constituion. Moral deportment good, has made some progress in Latin, & coresponding advance in the English branches. his fort is Mathematics

If I can enlist your interest in this matter would be glad to have your advice & influence—

Address me at Rocky Springs as to the care of Capt Regan—W. J. Lewis or Haywood Foote
