Judge W. L. Sharkey

Dear Sir

I have heard that you have been appointed Governor of This State. The condition in which our families have been left imperatively demands that I should seek employment to obtain the means of their sub-sistence. I am now staying with my daughter Mrs. Bander whose family consists at this time of Sixteen mostly females and children. She and they have been totally deprived of the means of making a support. What money we had became worthless on the grand failure, and we have nothing that will command current money, and since the surrender have been living on rations doled out by the Federal Commissary, which is too humiliating to be endu-red. I wish to aid in relieving them from that unpleasant condition hence this application. My infirmities disqualify me for ordinary pursuits. I am so deaf that I cannot distinguish words at the distance of three or four feet, and have to place my ear near to the mouth of a person speak-ing to me, so that coloquial intercourse soon becomes irksome. The only business that I could well attend to is that of Copying Recording or Transcribing documents and I have thoughts that such service might be required in some department under your control. if such shall be the case I desire to be employed for that labor

If such should not be required perhaps by a personal interview you might be able to diecide whether there would be any ser-vice that I could render you either in or out of your Office

I hope you will feel inclined to aid me in my efforts for which I shall feel under peculiar obligations at this time
