Hon. W. L. Sharkey,

Dear Sir,

I trust you may not have forgotten altogether one who once counted it among his greatest advantages and highest sources of satisfaction, to be permitted to regard you as a friend. What depths of bitter grief it has been my lot, as well as doubtless yours, to pass through since that time, it would be vain here to attempt to tell, and I will not make the effort. My present design is not to encroach upon your valuable time, which the cares of your present trying office must fully occupy, but to re-quest that you will send the ac-companying

companying letter to my old friend Rev. Wm. Cross Crane, Rector of St. Andrew's Jackson. I should not presume to take this liberty, but that I know of no means of sending a letter to Jackson unless I address it to you. I do not learn that any regular post-office communications have been opened as yet in the interior of Mississippi, but I take it for granted that your letters are in some manner provided for.

I would inquire after some of my dear friends in Mississippi, but I cannot venture to hope that you would find time to attend to my inquiries.
