Brookhaven, Miss., July 6, 1865.

Dear Sir—

Allow an old, but probably forgotten— acquaintance to molest you with a request, a com-pliance with which would be gratefully remembered. (You may remember my father, Archibald M^cManus, my late husband, J. G. Selph, or my brother Lewis M^cManus—my present husband is F. Heiderhoff, editor of the Brookhaven Advertiser.) I desire to obtain for my husband an appointment as lighthouse keeper, either at Pass Christian, Cat Island, or the North point of the Chandeleur Islands. Either one or more of these places are still vacant.

The war has reduced us from a competence to comparative want, and we would gratefully accept such a position.

Not knowing to whom to apply for the appoint-ment, I make bold to make my wishes known to you, and ask for the necessary information as well as your kind recommendation to the proper authority, which would doubtless secure the appointment.

Mr. Heiderhoff has succeeded in saving his printing office, and would—in case of success—establish a newspaper on the Seacoast. Enclosed please find an envelope for your answer.
