Petition from Lucius R. Wilson to President Andrew Johnson; July 17, 1865

To the Hon^l Andrew Johnson President of the United States of America. through Hon^l W^m L Sharkey Gov. of the State of Mississippi.

This petition respectfully represents. That Lucius R Wilson has for many years resided in the County of Yalobusha State aforesaid. That in the month of October 1862 he was elected Sheriff of said county, and re elected to said office in Octr 1864, which he continued to administer until the time when the Archives and other public property were taken possession of by the forces of the United States to wit: the 22^nd day of May 1865. That during the year 1863, he was appointed Confederate States Tax Collector for said county of Yalobusha by one G F Neale Chief Collector of Confederate Tax for the State of Mississippi, and entered upon and continued in the discharge of the duties imposed upon him by said appointment, until he ceased to act as such Sheriff, and that by reason of his said appointment and action in the premises, he is advised that he is by proclamation of the Pres^t of the U. S. of date 29^th May 1865 exempted from the benefits of the Amnesty.

Petitioner therefore in view of the fact that he has held no other Office or Agency Civil or Military since the 9^th day of Jany 1861 in the State of Mississippi or ^ⁱⁿ any other state and that he is no other manner excluded from the benifits of such Amnesty, and in view of the fact that he is loyal to the United States Government and the Government of the State of Mississippi, earnestly desires and respectfully prays that pardon be granted him that he may be restored to the rights and privileges of a loyal citizen. He proposes to take the necessary Oath and commits himself to the performance of the requirements of the Government aforesaid.
