I have learned with some surprise that a petition had been sent to you by the friends of ane of ~~ane of~~ My opponants in the recent election for sheriff representing that I belonged to The excepted class in The proclamation of his Excelen-cey The President of The United States

Before qualifying under your Excelaneys proclamation I took The affdvice of the ablest men of this bar—Amongst whom was The Hon. Sach? E Houston All parties consulted gave it as their opinion without hesitation or doubt That under The proclamation I was eligable=

I take the liberty of giving you briefly The facts some of The most prominant of which will be cor-roburated by accompanying letters from men who know The facts, whose reputation will satisfy you in referance to The correctness of their statements=

I was born in North Alabama my parents removed to this Monroe County in 1836, in which County I have resided almost continously ever since

except while I was holding the position of Indian Agent for the Pueblo Indians in the Teritory of New Mexico, to which position I was appointed in the Early part of The Adminestration of President Buchanan for the period of four years. In March 1861 (believing that I would not be reappointed) I tendered my resignation to take effect in June there after. Having been separated from My family in Mississippi. I desired to be with them and thought it imprudent to move them to the distant Indian Teritory an such uncertain times of office. At the time of My resignation I knew nothing of the action of the southern states in referance to secession nor did I learn it for months afterwards—I came to Mississippi did not enter the Confederate service until May 1863. At which time under The laws of said government I was liable to Conscription—

I was however in The State service for The period of two Months in the year 1862—I am a poor men My family were allmost distitute of necessaries I became a candidate so that I might be permitted to see after their Comfort & support—

At the Election Mr. Anderson whose friends have presented his name to you for appointment in my stead was amongst the candidates who opposed me I was the

The choice of the people. And if there were Union Men in The County. I know I got much the largest proportion of their votes—when I took the oath prescribed by the proclamation, it was in earnest I intended then and do now to make the best citizen I can both of The State & The United States—

I have been engaged in Circulating your proclamations and in influancing my friends and fellow citizens to take the oath & c, which statment I know the Hon L. H. Davis Probate Judge of this county well a nough—

Knowing I am not included in the excepted class of President Johnsons proclamation I hope your Excelancy may be satisfied with this statment and accompanying letters
