To his Excellency
Gov_r Sharkey, Jackson Miss

Sir

Will you pleae inform me in regard to the application of the writ of replevin, am I to understand that it applies to Property claimed by the Gov^t of the U S. where it is in the hands of its agents, or, of other parties who have sold it to the agents of the Confederate Gov_t

A large portion of the Property, Consists of cotton Sold to the So Called Confederate Gov^t, the proof of which is in my possession, and is beyond dispute, if Suits may be instituted in such Cases, apparently only to obstruct the officers of the Gov^t in the performance of their duties, they will feel called on, to apply to the Dept. for full power to protect the interests of the Gov^t, if there is any doubt in regard to their present authority
