Starkville Miss July 28^th 1865

To The Hon^bl William S. Sharkey Provisional ^Governor^ of the State of Mississippi

The petion of the undersigned F. H. Duquercron would respectfully represent that he is engaged in selling Drugs in the County of Oktibbeha and that by the provision of the late tax Bill he is liable to a tax of fity dollars—He would further represent that his bisiness is very limited having on hand merely the remnant of a stock ~~on hand~~ purchased before the war the sales from which by my book^s since the 19^th day of May last amounting to $35⁰⁰ only and further your petioner would represent that he has sold and continues to sell on a credit which in many instances in the present condition of the county amounts to giving away drugs and further represents that he has not the amount of fifty dollars on hand and the means of your petioner is confined entirely to the business in which he is eng=aged he having no other source from which derive means to pay said tax—Your petioner would further state his is the only establishment of the kind in the county and that he will not be able to carry on the business unless relieved from the paymeny of said tax of fifty dollars which in his case he considers a hardship—With the foregoing statement of facts your petioner would ask to be relieved from said tax—Your petioner would state further that he does not ask this relief to avoid the responsibilities and duties which are incumbent upon him as a good citizen
