His Excellency W L Sharkey

Sir—

I make application to you in order to be relived from the tax imposed of fifty dollars for retailing liquor

I was a soldier in the Confederate army & received a wound which permanently disables me from doing any manual labor. I have no means at all and have not made fifty dollars by selling liquor since I opened; but I think after a short while I may be able to support myself and my family, but if I am compelled to pay this tax it will close me up immediately

I have procured the signatures of several of my towns men to substantiate the correctness of my statement.
