Governor. Sharkey. Dear—Sir:

We the undersigned having taken no hand in the late war; availing ouselves of a law, enacted by the late Confederate Congress, exempting the Christian denomination known as Nazarenes, from military Service, Being members of that boddy, It being a fundamental principle of our church to have nothing to do with military or political matters, and especially opposed to taking all oaths, Believing as we do that "the kingdom ~~of this~~ and dominion and the greatness of all kingdoms under the whole heaven, Shall soon be give to the people of the Saints of the most high God whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom and all dominions Shall Serve and obey him," and upon these considerations, we would Respectfully ask of you to exempt us from taking the amnesty oath, from taking which oath our fraternity in va. is exmpted,

Please let us hear from you at your earliest convenience, and if compatibl with the fitness of things, a certificate of exemption for each
