His Excellency,
Wm. L. Sharkey
Jackson Miss,

Sir,

Under the tax law proclaimed by Your Excellency, Mr Metcalfe sheriff of Adams County, assessor and collector from the Undersigned who is Keeping a small grocery store, in this city, the sum of fifty dollars. This was a very onerous tax, but the sheriff at that time, had no discretion in the matter not being then authorized by Your Excellency to remit or abate the tax. Your petitioner would further represent that twenty dollars would be a high tax for him to pay, upon the amount of stock he has in his store, and is even more than a great many have been required to pay, who have a larger amount of stock than himself. He would be satisfied however with that assessment and prays that your Excellency would grant him relief in the premises and order that the excess, to wit, the sum of thirty dollars, be refunded to him.

The within Statement is true that I collected the fifty dollars of him & if I had received your authority to abate the tax before Collecting the sume, I should have reduced the same to Twenty five dollars.
