Your Excellency

Your petitioner would most respectfully represent, that he is a native of Granville County N. C. now a resident of County & State as indicated above & was so at the time the late rebellion commenced, by occupation a planter, and as earnest & sincere in his opposition to the secession dogma as man could be, but located here with all I possesed, & worth in 1860 more than 20,000$ I pray your special clemency & pardon for any agency I may have had in the late rebellion. I never bore arms against the U. S. Gov^t but did what I could to assist the poor & destitute around me, & they were many.

I now have in my possession a letter written by yow to Maj. Gen. Hurlbut bearing date at Nashville Dec. 5^th 1865 introducing and endorseing my Bro W^m H. Webb (then a citizen of Nashville) as a loyal citizen

As I do not know how better to communicate with you, I do so through my Brother who is now a citizen of Ohio. He knows my views & course in reference to our late troubles better than any other man. I also refer you to M^r J. M. Tomeney of Memphis. My taxable property at this time will not command the half of the excepted sum, & this with a wife & six little children constitutes the bulk of my fortune. Being overrun by first one party & then the other, I lost almost everything moveable. As I am only a plain farmer, I have made no effort to make out my petition in form, but have made a simple statement to which I could add much, but for annoying you.
