Dear Sir:

I recieved this morning your Tax Notice dated 14_th inst, informing me that the Assessor & Collector of Taxes are required to make this final report by the first day of October.

I am compelled to ask indulgence in my case, and hope you will appreciate the circumstances by which I am surrounded, and consider them sufficient to grant me a reasonable time beyond the first to make my first report for this County.

I am at this time engaged in a warm con-test for my office. My opponents are popular & influential men, and it has required all my time and attention since the opening of the Canvass, and will ^continue to^ require my best efforts to insure reelection. The change in affairs has made the office of vast importance to me in various ways, and it is but justice to myself and family that I should make the most earnest endeavours to hold it again.

After the election I will be free to commence the Collection of the remaining taxes in the County, which will take but a short while, and after which I will report immediately at Jackson to turn these over and submit my first statement. There is now at this time some five thousand bales of Cotton in the County awaiting transportation to market and upon which the tax is to be

paid as soon as it can be shipped. I think the Rail Road will in the course of twenty or ~~fifteen~~ ^thirty^ days be able to carry off this Cotton, and the tax collected on it will be a considerable item in the public fund.

Hoping that it may not be in-consistent with your duties as Chief Ex-ecutive of the State to grant me a reasonable indulgence for the reasons I have set forth, I am

Gov Sharkey if you could send me orders to collect the tax on this cotton as it Stands it would be best if not I fear that the tax on it will not come in it theare is a large amount in the hands of Spekulators [?]
