District of Hinds County
May Term A. D. 1867.

The Grand Jurors of the State of Mississippi, Summoned, empannelled sworn and charged, to enquire in and for the First District Circuit Court of Hinds County, and State of Mississippi, at the Term aforesaid of the Court aforesaid, in the name and by the authority of the State of Mississipppi, upon their oath present that Tom Shaw

late of the County aforesaid, on the 10^th day of April A. D. 1867, with force and arms, in the county aforesaid, and within the jurisdiction of this Court, to=wit: in the District aforesaid, One Cameo Set of Jewelry (earrings) breast pin & bracelet, of the value of Three Hundred and Fifty Dollars, One pearl set of jewelry (earrings brestpin and bracelet, of the value of Three Hundred Dollars, One Coral Set of jewelry, (ear=rings, breast pin and bracelet,) of the value of One Hundred and Fifty Dol=lars, the goods and chattles of Mrs. P. T. Baley before then feloniously, stolen and carried away, did feloni=ously have and receive, he the said Tom Shaw, well knowing the Said goods & chattles to have been before feloniously taken, stolen and carried

away. Contrary to the form of the Statute in such cases made and provided, and against the peace and dignity of the State of Mississippi.

The State of Mississippi 94 vs Tom Shaw a freedman

Came the District attor=ney who prosecutes on behalf of the State, and the Defendant in his own proper person, who being solemnley arraign-ed upon the charges in the Indictment laid, pleads thereto, not guilty, where=upon issue being joined, came a jury to wit. 1 W. L. Handy 2 W. M. Killpatrick 3 W^m T Berresford 4 H. L. Shackelford 5 J. K. Barbour 6 Jacob Shaw 7 A. Rosenthal 8, Henry Shurles 9 P. Rivinac 10 Joseph Burrows 11 E. Bloom 12 S. D. Brown, who being duly elected, tried sworn and empannelled, the truth to speak and a true verdict render upon the issue joined, after hearing the evidence and argument of Counsel retired to con=sider of their verdict. Whereupon they Say, we the jury find the defendant

guilty, as charged in the Indictment, and assess the value of the property re=ceived at the Sum of Eight Hundred and fifty Dollars. It is therefore con=sidered by the Court that said Defendant be remanded to jail, there to be Safely Kept by the Sheriff of this County, to await the Sentence of this Court.

And on this 27^th day of May 1867 the fol=lowing Sentence was ~~was~~ passed on said de=fendent, to wit

Receiving Stolen goods Tom Shaw a freedman

The Defendant having been found guilty of the crime of receiving Sto=len goods, at this term of the Court, is now brought to the bar of the Court, in open Court to hear his sentence. It is therefore ordered by the Court, that the Defendant be sentenced to imprisonment in the Penitentiary at Jackson, in the Said State, for and during the term of Five Years, and that said imprisonment commence, from the (22^d) twenty Second day of May 1867, and it is further or=dered, that said defendant be taken by the Sheriff of Hinds County, and Kept and Confined, in the jail of the First district of Said County, until he be taken from there by order of the Super=intendant of said Penitentiary, to be conveyed to said Penitentiary as the law directs. And that the Said Super=

intendant of Said penitentiary will Keep him the said Defendant in Said Peni=tentiary, until the Said Five years be fully ended.
