Sir

In reply to yours of May 25 ^th 1869 I have the honor to say, that on the 25 ^th of March 1869 I forwarded to Mr J. G. Dent Sup^y of the Levee Works, State warrant No 3388 for Twenty Dollars and directed him to give the warrant to "Marion Kelly" on his discharge on the 2 ^nd of April 1869. I at the same time forwarded to Mr Dent the usual receipt for the Convict to Sign on receiving the warrant, a few weeks ago Kelly called on me at the Prison for his warrant and I told him it had been sent to the Levee (where Kelly was at work) and in Consequence of statements made to me by Kelly I wrote to Col. Dent, he replied at once and Stated that the man "Kelly" had left some few days before his time was out, that he (Col D) had made the man Kelly advances on the warrant and had Kelly remained untill

his sentence would have expired he would undoubtedly have got all that belonged to him

I have not seen Kelly since but Should he come here I will see that Justice is done him in every way, I preseme the reason why Kelly calls on you and not on me is that he fears I might detain him for leaving before his time expired.
