The Governor of Mississippi.

Sir.

The question so much agitated of late in the Southern States, that of inducing the flood of european Emigrants to take a southerly course, instead of as is now the case a positive westward course, induces me to inquire of You whether You would feel inclined to adopt the measures, and take the

stand assurred by the western Governors that of

1^st appoint responsible men of swedish norwegian, danish & german nationality, who have lived here long enough to make themselves acquainted with the manners customs habits & language of the ame-rican people, to go home to their own country, paid by the State from which they are accredited, to agitate & canvass by personal intercourse, &c phamphlets in their own language setting forth the advantages derived, by settling in that particular State, and thus attract the attention of those who
have made up their mind to go to the U S but having no fixed point where to go & live.—

2^d, If You desire to have the manual of Mississippi, trans-lated from English into Norwegian & Danish, Swedish or German, I can offer You my Services, for the first named translation & will engage to get the other translations satisfactorily executed, & if You are willing to pay good compen-sation, I will engage to canvass Sweden, Norway, Denmark Slesvig, Holstein & northern Germany on the subject in question, all of which languages I speak & warrant You that I will do my place justice. If You do

not feel at liberty to make any engagement untill the next legislature meets, I should be obliged if You would lay this latter before that body & I would add, that if I should be chosen to go to Europe, my office would be purely for business, & no lobbying job or political influence should enter into the engagement.
