My DrSir,

In reply to yours of to day about "the prisoner James. J. Fisher", I expect you mean J. J Foster, as it was him that M^r Smythe requested of me a certificate of good character. The Prisoner "Foster" has told me that his friends have paid either Eighty or one hundred Dollars to a lawyer, & about two months ago a Prisoner that has since been discharged, loaned this same Prisoner Fifty Dollars to pay this lawyer, which I gave the lawyer myself—

This discharged Prisoner I refer to above had in my hands 250 Dollars, he gave a Lawyer one hundred to get him out, Foster got 50, lieving the balance which I paid him on his dirct[page torn] less a few Dollars that I spent for him in [page torn] Pipe &^c. Your note is of course strictly confidential and will be pleased to give you any information I have about the Prisoners,
