Hon J. L. Alcorn

Dear Sir

There is a movement on foot in this county that I think will prove much to the injury of the county if Successfull. The object [unclear] to remove A. Taylor deputy Sheriff, and es=[unclear]blish drinking Saloons. Taylor is an impetuous [unclear] [lass?] man with much influence among the [unclear]reedman, expecially with the leaders, he is a terror to offenders, Stands well with best citizens, has great influence with the Board of Supervisors, and is a deadly enemy to Whiskey Shops.

J. W. Boykin late sheriff is an enemy to Taylor Boykin is Shrewd and cunning, has considerable influence with certain classes, he together with the the present Clerk. (an imported Yankee who allows his negro cook to sit at the table with his own family), and some Waynesboro Mer=chants—who want to establish a grocery—are

leaders in the movement refered to. They are getting up a petition praying Taylor's removal. I think ~~think~~ it best for the County for the movement to fail.

I hope you will pardon me for the liberty I am taking as a stranger;—the good of the county is before my eyes—I am no politition myself I take no political papers, I affiliate with no party. I voted for youself and indorse your cause, but I am no radical, I meerly mention this to clear me of selfish motives, As to the possible corr[page torn] of my statements, allow me to refer you [page torn] Judges Handcock, Chandler and Leachman or Judge John Watts our Senator, or the representatives from this county and Clark
